Frequently Asked Questions
What is the NHBRC registration test?
The NHBRC Registration Technical Assessment Exam is a compulsory assessment for applicants who intend to register with the NHBRC. The company owner may write the test personally, or an authorised representative may write on behalf of the company where permitted by NHBRC requirements and supported by the correct appointment documentation. The assessment is mandatory and must be completed in line with NHBRC procedures before a registration certificate may be issued.
What is a technical manager?
A Technical Manager is an individual appointed by a company to act as its authorised representative for the NHBRC Technical Assessment, where this is permitted under NHBRC requirements. The appointment must be made in writing and the individual must meet the eligibility requirements set by NHBRC (for example, being an adult and having valid identification and any other requirements applicable to the applicant’s status). The purpose of the role is to ensure the company has a designated person who can complete the assessment process in accordance with NHBRC rules.
What subjects are covered in the NHBRC Technical Assessment?
The assessment generally covers core residential construction topics such as site works, excavations, foundations, soil types, concrete, reinforcement, brickwork, roofing, damp-proofing, drainage, plumbing, and general compliance with building regulations and NHBRC technical requirements. The questions are intended to test practical understanding of common construction standards.
What is the pass mark and where is the test written and how?
The current pass mark is 52% (confirm when booking) and the technical assessment test is written at official NHBRC offices nationwide under controlled conditions. The test is computer-based and fully multiple choice.
How long does the NHBRC Technical Assessment take?
The assessment is completed in a single sitting. Candidates are currently given 2 hours (confirm when booking) to complete the assessment test.
What happens if I fail the NHBRC Technical Assessment?
The NHBRC gives candidates two attempts (confirm when booking) to pass the NHBRC’s technical assessment. If you fail the first time, the NHBRC will give you another chance to pass on the second attempt. However, if you fail the second time, no further opportunities will be granted by the NHBRC.
How many times can the NHBRC Technical Assessment be rewritten?
The NHBRC gives candidates only two chances to pass the technical assessment. If a candidate fails on the second attempt, they are not given any further opportunities to write. In other words, they may not be allowed further attempts under current NHBRC rules.
What is the NHBRC registration process?
The NHBRC registration process typically begins by creating an account on the
NHBRC’s official online portal
and uploading the required documents as specified by NHBRC (for example, director identification, company registration documents, and proof of address). The NHBRC also requires payment of the applicable fees before booking the compulsory Technical Assessment. NHBRC then allocates an assessment date and branch. After successfully completing the assessment and meeting all requirements, the registration certificate is issued. Fees and requirements may change, so applicants should confirm the latest amounts and steps directly with NHBRC.
Do you assist with the NHBRC registration process?
No. We are an independent training organisation that provides mock assessments and study support for the NHBRC Technical Assessment only. We do not assist with, participate in, or influence the NHBRC registration process, and we are not affiliated with NHBRC.
How effective are the mock assessments provided in the guide?
The mock assessments are designed to support preparation by familiarising candidates with the typical multiple-choice structure and the technical concepts commonly tested. They are intended for study and revision purposes and may help improve understanding, confidence, and exam readiness. Individual results will vary based on prior knowledge and study effort.
Can I use this study guide inside the NHBRC examination venue?
No. Although the NHBRC Technical Assessment may be described as open-book, only the official NHBRC hard-copy manuals permitted by NHBRC are allowed in the examination venue. This study guide is strictly for preparation purposes and must not be taken into the exam room.
